Tutoring should start before the problems begin!
Back to school time is upon us and I have been getting a lot of calls and messages from parents looking for start planning for the 2018-2019 school year. Here are some things to remember about subject tutoring and my scheduling.
- I generally schedule in one hour periods but that doesn’t mean the student is completely set after an hour. They likely need to finish work or study based on my guidance.
- Schedule at least 72 hours in advance. If someone doesn’t schedule on a specific day, I schedule my life based on a free day.
- If my schedule does not suit your needs, please inquire. I put my best and most available times on the sign-up calendar but I may be able to move some things around to meet your needs. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
- Students must come prepared or your money is lost. I can pick their brain to figure out what they are learning, but for a student to be successful, I must see first-hand what topic they are learning and the teacher’s approach so I can be in line with those methods. They can never bring too much information!
- If your student is struggling slightly, begin tutoring. I don’t recommend waiting until they fail a test because they have dug a huge hole and it’ll be difficult to catch up and progress with the class all in one tutoring session. Start tutoring before a crisis!
- For ACT tutoring, start early. The month prior to a test if often too late to make significant progress. I am not saying not to try. I am advocating for giving your student the proper amount of time to prepare and I feel that is at least eight weeks in advance of the test date.
- Form a workshop if you would like to save money. Pick a date, time, location, and have the group ready to work. Schedule with me and I will be there with my white board and enthusiasm!
I look forward to a great school year of getting to know your students, how they learn, and helping them succeed.
